Before the first survey laid out the town, the land was home to the Lakota and other American Indians for generations. In 1876, white settlers attracted to the Black Hills by the discovery of gold founded a community they called Hay Camp. Located at a natural entrance into the Black Hills, the community was later renamed Rapid City and became the largest city in western South Dakota.
