Rapid City Hosts Third Legislative Crackerbarrel

The third area legislative crackerbarrel was hosted by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Opening the crackerbarrel was Senator Bruce Rampelberg, who addressed the failure of Senate Bill 1200, which would have granted local governments more authority to regulate outdoor advertising, including digital billboards and the moving forward of Senate Bill 157, which prohibits certain billboard restrictions.

Other remarks came from Senator Elizabeth Kraus, who discussed Senate Bill 173, which would have required parental consent for minors to use tanning beds, but was not moved forward by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. Representative Don Kopp expressed his support for failed bills including two which would have provided for the drug testing of Medicare and TANF recipients, and two bills that addressed illegal immigration. Representative Dan Dryden mentioned several bills he supported, including House Bill 1234, which would enact Governor Daugaard's education reform proposals.

Questions from the audience included questions about driver's licensing requirements, the Veterans Affairs medical center in Hot Springs, ongoing education reform legislation, and several questions about billboards

The final crackerbarrels of the session will be held in Rapid City on Saturday, February 25 from 9 AM to 11 AM at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's Education Building and at 2 PM in Edgemont at the Edgemont Senior Center. For more legislative news, visit our 2012 Legislative Information page and view our archive of legislative news.
