On the night of June 9, 1972 a sudden and intense rain storm wrecked havoc in the Black Hills. The region will mark the fortieth anniversay of the flood this June and remember the 238 people known to have died. To prepare for this commemoration, representatives from the Black Hills region have formed a planning committee. Former Rapid City Mayor Don Barnett chairs the group. Verne Sheppard serves as vice chairman and Kay Rippentrop is secretary. Committee members include LaVonne Masters, Jerry Soener, Jim Kuehn, Larry Lytle, Gary Brown, Suzanne Martley, Donovin Sprague, Greta Chapman, Ray Summers, Larry Dahlstrom, and Wes Storm.
