Museums, Libraries & Archives

From the Tri-State Museum in Belle Fourche to the Trails, Trains and Pioneers Museum in Edgemont, Black Hills historical institutions transport visitors and residents back to earlier eras in the region's history. They collect, maintain and exhibit artifacts and images that make the past more than a foreign land.

The museum collections housed here tell dinosaur stories that stretch back millennia and stories of Native Americans that reach back centuries. Several share the history of white settlement in the Black Hills. Still other collections focus on events of more recent decades, from aeronautical developments to natural disasters such as the 1972 Rapid City flood.

Area libraries are also repositories of community history and provide a wealth of information for local students and researchers. The Case Library at Black Hills State University in Spearfish houses an extensive western history collection, as well as a collection of clay tablets from the Tigris-Euphrates Valley dating back to 2500 B.C.

The Minnilusa Historical Association at The Journey Museum in Rapid City maintains an archive of artifacts, rare texts and letters, western history, and a large collection of historical photographs.
