Oil Exploration and Mining in South Dakota

The history of the settlement of the Black Hills owes its start to mining.  The discovery of gold led to the first influx of white settlers into the area and from here, mining progressed into the extraction of other minerals, including silver and uranium.  The discovery of oil in western North Dakota has led many to believe that oil may also lie beneath of the surface of western South Dakota as well and oil exploration is currently being done in earnest.  The proposed Keystone XL Pipeline project, which would ferry tar sands oil from fields in Canada to refineries in Texas and Louisana, calls for the pipeline to cross the western part of the state.  The oil boom may well resemble the gold rush in the near future.
